About Us
Our Mission
The mission of the Stephanie Waterman Foundation is to provide opportunities through tennis, for underserved children to better themselves through a positive learning environment that promotes academic excellence, personal responsibility, character development, and leadership skills.
Our Vision
The non-profit organization that facilitates and develops junior recreational and competitive tennis across the Kansas City Urban Core.
Our Calling
Population Served
The program is open to young people between the ages of eight and eighteen who reside in the greater Kansas City area. However. the 10 year old and under is the primary target age range. The program operates several park sites: southeast community center, Martin Luther King Square and Hickman Mills middle school. We primarily serve under served or at-risk children from the inner-city neighborhoods. The quality of the program attracts some middle-income children as well, resulting in an economically diverse group. Approximately 79% of our participants are African-American, 20% Hispanic and 1% other races; 42% are boys and 58% are girls.
We coordinate our program with other youth programs and services to give the Kansas City youth diverse neighborhood sports and education programs.
Measurements of our Success
The Stephanie Waterman Foundation (d.b.a. NJTL of GKC) existence since 1987 is a testament to the importance of our programming. Our belief in the mission of the program is evidence by its positive outcomes on participants. The generosity of our donors and the dedicated efforts of a small staff and many volunteers are the reason for its longevity.
